Methodology
Relative weights come from the IPPS Final Rule Table 5 published annually by CMS for each fiscal year (October to September). Each weight reflects the average resources used to treat cases in that group. The national payment is the weight times that year's national operating standardized amount and capital federal rate, for a hospital receiving the full update. It is a benchmark before the wage index, DSH, IME and outlier adjustments that set an individual hospital's payment.
